Health news update — 5 October 2026
WHO’s new guidance on heat illness prevention at large events highlights safe drinking water, cooling facilities and medical care to protect crowds and workers.
The World Health Organization released the guidance on 30 September 2026 for major sporting, religious and cultural gatherings.
What WHO’s heat illness review found
WHO’s evidence review examined studies from 1980 to 2025, recording nearly half a million medical encounters and more than 22,000 heat-related illnesses. Well-organized on-site medical services enabled more than 90% of patients to receive treatment at event venues, easing pressure on hospitals and ambulances.
How organizers can reduce heat-related illness
The guidance recommends combining safe drinking water and toilets, cooling facilities, adjusted schedules, crowd management, worker protection, clear public messages, real-time monitoring and prepared medical teams.
Heat safety should be built into the entire event plan, including venue design, transport and access to care. WHO urges governments and organizers to prepare before temperatures become dangerous, protecting attendees, volunteers and workers.
