UNAIDS says fair access to medicines, diagnostics and health services must turn pandemic promises into practical action.
What happened?
In a statement issued today, UNAIDS welcomed the UN General Assembly's adoption of a political declaration on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response on 12 October 2026.
The agency says the experience of HIV, COVID-19 and Ebola shows that scientific advances and strong health systems must be matched by access for the communities that need them most.
Three priorities to watch
- Fair sharing: complete an equitable pathogen access and benefit-sharing agreement.
- Wider production: invest in local and regional manufacturing and technology sharing.
- Community involvement: support sustained investment, human rights and the people most affected.
Why it matters for HIV services
UNAIDS stresses that medicines and tests alone are insufficient. Political leadership, trusted services and community participation are also central to an effective response. The declaration is a policy commitment; implementation remains the next step.
