The World Health Organization and partners have launched a global roadmap to address high blood pressure disorders in pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia. The plan covers 2026 to 2035 and beyond.

Earlier detection and better access to care

WHO estimates that these disorders complicate 10–15% of pregnancies worldwide and account for around 16% of maternal deaths. The announcement highlights gaps in blood-pressure checks, urine protein testing, essential medicines and timely referral for emergency care.

The roadmap brings together research, clinical guidance, access to medicines and diagnostics, implementation and accountability. It aims to ensure that proven care and future innovations reach women and babies who need them.

Health effects can continue after birth

WHO notes that women affected by hypertensive pregnancy disorders face higher risks later in life of chronic high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke and kidney disease. This underlines the importance of ongoing care after childbirth.

The roadmap calls for coordinated action by governments, researchers, health professionals, funders and other partners to improve prevention, detection and treatment.
