Health update | 20 October 2026
Hepatitis B can damage the liver even when a person has no obvious symptoms. In its updated fact sheet, the World Health Organization highlights vaccination as an effective way to prevent infection, alongside testing and access to care.
Why prevention matters
The virus can pass from mother to baby at birth, through sexual contact, and through contaminated needles or blood exposure. Long-term infection can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Practical steps
- Ask a healthcare professional to review your hepatitis B vaccination record and advise whether you need vaccination.
- Discuss testing if you may have been exposed or have a partner or household member with hepatitis B.
- Avoid sharing needles or items that may carry blood.
A blood test is needed to establish infection. People diagnosed with hepatitis B should receive medical assessment and follow-up; some need antiviral treatment.
