Can You Have Syphilis Without Knowing It?
Nexus Laboratories health information team • Updated 8 October 2026
Yes. A person can have syphilis without recognising symptoms. A hidden sore, mild rash or period with no symptoms can make infection easy to miss.

What latent syphilis means
Latent syphilis is diagnosed through blood testing when there are no signs of primary or secondary disease. The clinician uses past tests, exposure history and previous treatment to work out duration; feeling well does not make treatment unnecessary.
Why screening is useful
Do not judge your need for a test only by how you feel or whether your partner looks healthy. Discuss a diagnosed partner, new exposures, pregnancy or other STI concerns with a clinician. Testing plans should fit your history.
Making sense of results
A recent negative result can fall within the window period. A reactive antibody test can also reflect past treated infection. Bring old records if possible and ask for an explanation of the full laboratory assessment.
Frequently asked question
If symptoms disappear, has syphilis gone?
Not necessarily. Improvement without appropriate treatment cannot establish that the infection is cured.
Useful next steps for readers in Malaysia
Use this guide to prepare questions for a healthcare professional. Bring your exposure dates, symptoms, test results and any treatment records. Ask what the result means, whether you need another test and how follow-up will be arranged.
This is general health information, not an individual diagnosis. Seek urgent care for new vision, hearing or neurological problems; contact your antenatal team promptly about a possible exposure during pregnancy.
